Just as an aside, I'm no sort of footballer at all, but I have, on occasion, as us lads do, particularly during games of rugby, basketball and cricket, jumped. I do understand that you have to move your arms a bit, particularly your elbows, if you want to get a decent bit of height, but at no time did I feel the need to fling my arms wide like a giant flapping albatross coming in to land.

In most sports where jumping is more commonplace than in football, flinging your arms out wide would make it impossible to catch the ball - so to suggest it's impossible to jump any other way is palpable nonsense.

Unless NS thinks Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaq and John Eales, Courtney Lawes, Bob Norster etc could be characterised as, 'not very good at jumping'.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big fan of all these new rules, I’m just pointing out that they exist, and how, in their current form, Benteke had to go.

For me, this all goes back at least to Beckham getting a red in 98, for “violently retaliating,” with a harmless kick. The rules changed so refs couldn’t use their own discretion, as thinking men, and instead had to be robotic in their judgements.

Changing the subject slightly but can you imagine the media wankfest if the scouse cunts or spurs had scored a goal like we did last night from the goalkeeper through to the ball hitting the palace net without any opposition player getting anywhere near it. But we do it and a few rags damn the goal with faint praise.

Fabianski chips it to Coufal who sprints down the right padt two oposition players who then slips it inside to Soucek 20 yards from goal he plays to to Lanzini who shapes to shoot and lays a perfect ball down the side of the 18 yard box for Coufal to chip into the area and from 12 yards out Haller executes a perfect bicycle kick sending the ball rocketing into the top corner.

Now substitute our players names with Trent Wanker, Flobmino, Manke and then Silleh and you would have the commentators screaming for 5 minutes, instead of a little chuckle and " from the shadows to centre stage"

Take heading out of the game then Lilly son... because if you think that those 2 incidents last night gave our players dementia then there is no point... just do 5 a side rules... nothing above shoulder height and no long range shots in case you hurt your big toe

Anyone who has a problem with Benteke’s sending off, has a problem with the latest rules. Yes, compared to back in the day, it was harsh, but these days, then there’s the rules. Intent is only relevant at distinguishing between a yellow or a straight red.

A gentle love tap in the face is enough for a straight red, if it’s clearly on purpose. You only have to push someone in the chest to go off these days, particularly if the other man goes down and rolls around. Benteke did nothing malicious, but he’s a big bloke who caught his opponents in the face with flailing arms, several times. Reckless, TWICE = early bath.

As Surface said, with all the dementia and concussion discussions going on right now, these rules will more likely than not get stricter.
